Who's On your Shoulder? Your Ego or Your Intuition?

Ego vs Intuition

Remember the cartoons that depicted the guy in white on one shoulder and the guy in red on the other; both characters helped the main character make a decision. That’s how I look at Ego vs. Intuition. Both sides want what is best for you, the main character, but what is “best” seeks to fulfill different needs.

What Is Your Ego?

The ego is a part of your psyche that was initially developed to protect you and make you feel good; over time, it becomes your self-centered perspective on the world. It is the part of you that feels and is disconnected from the world.

What Is Your Intuition?

Intuition is instinctual knowing, personal spiritual guidance, and your internal compass.

When you have a feeling, can you tell if it comes from your ego or intuition? Having the ability to determine the difference between egoic influences and intuition influences will change your life.  Your intuition will save your life and help you align with your soul’s purpose in this lifetime. However, your ego will help you become successful, but in directions that you will find unfulfilling in the long run.

Guidelines to Help Make The Distinction Between Ego and Intuition

  • Emotional Connection. An intuition choice feels like it was beamed up to you out of nowhere. You might be taking a walk and suddenly feel the urge to go left instead of your normal right. A solution to a work problem might come up out of nowhere while you are folding clothes. The back and forth in your head is your ego trying to chime in.

  • External Results and Gratification. Did you decide to buy the car to get the attention of your peers, or did you buy the car because you love the design and features? Are you doing something for a specific outcome/reaction, or is your action satisfying by itself?
  • Rationalization. Your ego will provide you with all the self-talk to convince you of its decision. Pay attention to your thoughts. . “I’ll never get that house, and I don’t feel like being upset when it doesn’t go through. People like me never get what they want, and I just have to deal with it.” Watch out for the bah humbug. Your ego can be your biggest hater by giving you a heaping dose of fear while trying to succeed.  Ego relies on past data. Intuition doesn’t require logic or examples from your past or other people’s past. Your intuition is constantly expanding your standard of knowing.  If you have logical banter going back and forth in your head, it's your ego.
  • Judgment. The ego loves to label, and it feels comfortable putting things in black and white boxes like a computer program. Intuition comes in like a gentle bell or calm sunrise. You will not be able to run to the internet to look up what comes from your intuition.

The Ego Isn’t Always Wrong.

Self-preservation is noble and a great thing for living humans. We must avoid being overcome by ego and thus missing out on our intuition and Divine Guidance that is here to help us move beyond surviving to thrive. Look at your ego and intuition as part of your spiritual transmission. To master them is to be able to drive a manual transmission instead of being pulled around involuntarily by an automatic transmission.

Master your spiritual transmission and know when to change gears to receive the best in life and when it is time to change gears for your protection. Tune in. Consider these tips as your receive your messages and mind chatter.
